The Kauai Domestic Violence Prevention Task Force
The Kauai Domestic Violence Prevention Task Force was launched in the summer of 2009, with the mission
of “bringing safety and harmony to Kaua`i’s families through community outreach and collaboration,
offering empowering solutions and resources for prevention, education, intervention and treatment of domestic violence.”
A diverse group of community members representing various non-profit social service agencies, education,
healthcare, law enforcement, the faith community, county and state government, DV survivors and more, meet
monthly and collaborate on projects to raise awareness and empower members of the community to step up and
help change attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors around family violence.
Active sub-committees have been formed by members based on their personal interest(s) within the field of DV. At
this time, these include Parenting/Partnering, Media/PR, Youth, Faith Based, Professional Education, and Male Involvement.
In the first year, the task force developed a number of resources for community members including a
Family Safety & Support resource card of phone contacts for assistance with DV issues, a Continuum
of Care matrix of services available on island, and a resource sheet of ways to help a friend or
family member, whether victim or offender.
The task force is a grassroots organization of interested individuals, sponsored by the YWCA of Kaua`i,
and is open to anyone in the community who wants to make a difference. Meetings take place on the last
Thursday of the month at Queen Liliu`okalani Children’s Center, 4530 Kali Rd. in Lihue, 9:45 am to noon.
